Tree of Life Crewel
Designed and hand embroidered in England this crewel work panel dates from the early 20th century. The ‘Tree of Life’ motif was born out of the Jacobean era and this piece is a great example of the Jacobean revival during the early arts & crafts era.
The tree curves from top to bottom gently as detailed flowers and leaves grow out from it. The stem, chain and split stitches in woollen yarn use tonal graduations to give the impression of shade and light. The earthy tones of the embroidery combined with the sinuous form of the foliage point to the Arts & Crafts movement.
