Grotto style throne
This chair has a classic yet fantastical appearance. It is highlighted by hand-carved decorative motifs consisting of a centre scalloped shell motif and stylised dolphin detail on its arms. These details show the influence of the late 19th Venetian Grotto style.
The seat rests upon fluted truncated cone front legs ending in spherical feet and sabre back legs.
European nobility favoured grotto furniture for their shell-encrusted grottos which they built in the grounds of their grand houses during the 18th and 19th Centuries.
